Morena
Judeo-Spanish songs
The traditional Sephardic repertoire is a feminine repertoire. Most of the texts are expressed from the woman’s point of view; moreover the songs were transmitted orally from mother to daughter down the centuries.
Alternating between joy and suffering, these songs are all about women: young girls, mothers, brides, lovers… Between melancholy laments, amorous light-heartedness, maternal tenderness and even recipes, they present an intimate picture of Sephardic womanhood.
